"Meet Joe Black"---A remake of "
Death takes a Holiday" which I saw on TV once and do not remember much of the movie,
except that Cary Grant was in it. I went to see MJB because I enjoyed watching
" 7 years in Tibet" in spite of Brad pitt. This guy Brad Pitt must be one of the
luckiest actors around, he has a minimum amount of basic acting skill, but often gets
great scripts and works with good directors.
In terms of acting ability, MJB has Anthony Hopkins and a rather charming leading young
actress, both of them are fine actors. In terms of story line, it is not the greatest
story ever told. It is just an incredibly romantic movie on account of the good director
and the fine cinematography. The movie also features the most colorful firework scene
since " To catch a thief ".
This movie also brings up an interesting question to my mind. You see, Death took the body
of a cute-looking young man whom the heroine met briefly before Death took over. She liked
the young man quite a lot. When they met again, this young man had the same body, but took
on the "personality" of Death. She fell in love with him while he was Death.
Near the end of the movie, Death left the young man's body, and the young man became
himself again, and was a rather different person. The girl knew he was a different person,
but that did not seem to discourage her from continuing with the relationship. This
puzzles me in that the movie is making a statement that all one needs is to be cute and it
does not matter what sort of person one is, so what is new here ? Is it just me who does
not understand this movie?
