History 3

SS Lau

Hi Louis; Long time no see. I still remember the time we met in HK in 96 and had a few good laughs together. Hope all is well with you. Is it also memorial day in Canada ? I have been watching the French Open today and now back to see what is happening in the lab. I found all my colleagues in their office working away. The French open has no effects on them. Not a good sign for them, perhaps, a worse sign for me.

It is so nice to hear from you again (through Car sky car earth). I just want to emphasize that when I wrote " some big countries are going to  bomb Chinese cities in 5 or 10 years later" - I never thought of Chinese  Embassy bombing in Yugoslavia. The Chinese embassy bombing could be an  honest mistake carried by NATO; I do not want to discuss about it. However,  I believe that the bombing should be stopped; too many people are suffering  for no reasons. I don't know if it was an honest mistake or not that NATO bombed the Chinese embassy. But I believe the bombing of Yugoslavia has its reasons, I don't know what they are. I aslo believe if the former Soviat Union was still around and if Yugoslovia was still a memeber of that alliance, NATO would not have bombed. In five to ten years and as long as China has nuclear and long range missile capability, NATO would not bomb any Chinese cities, no matter what. This is my personal view of this whole affair, and I don't believe there is justice in any of the these military actions anywhere at anytime. It is all about money and power and, of course, oil. No one governement really cares if the peopel are suffering, it is just not part of the consideration.

There is apparently no oil in Yugoslavia, then why the military action ? I can only guess,
but what do I know ? One thing appears to hold true, one gets shafted easily if and only if one cannot fight back with military  might. Just look at Isreal, they believe in "an eye for an eye". Only dumb guys like Iraq would fire Scud missile to mess with them, and some of them bombed their buses.

An interesting story is unfolding in my lab in terms of nuclear capability, one of my guys will be going to Los Alamos to do research for the summer. As a student of the UC system, he has to be treated equally and has equal rights to conduct research at LANL. As a Chinese student from the mainland, they have a hard time getting him in ( even outside the fence). We shall see if they would really let him in comes early June when he arrives over there.
