Yes, we are ventruing into the serious discussion
mode now - politics and religion. Thanks to James Koo's courage in bringing it up as
he did in recent past on other equally sensitive subject - girls. While Mr. Lee's
response was a little too harsh on poor James' Chinese history lessons in Pui
Ching, he did hit a very very good point.
The American press/media ,with or without the government's influence, is spreading the
anti- Chinese sentiments starting earlier this year. All news magazines reported on
the "ups and downs" of the Sino-American relation with news items in the
past six months or so.
The ill-conceived of bombing the Serbs is a good hint of the US's bully policy. The irony
is that all the Kosovos "humanitarian" tragidies were multiplied many
folds by the US/NATO actions. The Albanians were the enemy of this country only a
few years ago, and since when the US cares so much for a few hundred thousands lives
in third world countries. Crocodile tears. Its all a political game. And that leads
to Mr. Lee keen observation.
I too had the same fear that one day the US will get in trouble with China and Tibet
will fit perfectly as the excuse to do so. This Memorial Day, the large Japanese
American population in the Pacific Northwest, as in the past, refreshes us with the
history lesson of the Executive Order 9066 which put all Japanese Americans during
the WWII into concentration camps in the name of protecting them from angry
Americans after Pearl Harbor. Ha.
For those history fans, yes, Tibet did has an organized resistance fighting force
fully funded and supplied by the CIA after 1949 to destablize Mao's Commjnist China.
This history has been documented in news films as aired in many PBS, A&E and
History Channels. Also as most other US backed minorities insurgencies around the
world, the US or CIA has a tradition of abandoning the operations half way and let
the poor "freedom fighters" got wiped out. Bay of Pigs in Cuba; Hmeog in
Laos; Contra in Nicaraqua; Kurds in Iraq; or even the New 4th Army in Chiang's KMT
last stand in China.
From a global view point, the feature article in the current issue of the Taiwan's Defense
Technology Monthly 5/99, "Turmoil in the Balkans viewed from the Taiwan
Strait" also has detailed anlysis and comments that seriously questioned the
motive of the US/NATO actions. It has a side story on the three US soldiers that
were caught. Before the capture, US boasted about its special forces infiltrated
Yugoslavia with ease, and after the capture, claimed its forces never crossed the
border. This "big brother" attitude and throwing its weight around may
backlash some day as it did many times in recent memory. If and when the US's
consider China is in its way to achieve world domination, then we the American
Chinese will be the scapegoats or sacrificial lamb (depending on one's
religion) of any resulting conflict. Just look at the Dept. of Energy's mess
at Los Alamos. It is scary to read between the lines on all the stories on Zhu's
visit, China's economic growth, missile treaty with Japan, the accidental bombing of
the Belgrade China embassy, and the STAGED photo of the US ambassador in Beijing
framed by the inked and broken door. Paranoid ? No! Sensitive ? Yes, and we've got
to be.
Our role as Chinese Americans must be alert to the political winds and educate the
public of the potential danger. Chinese in this country, dispite the financial and
academic successes of many, has one of the worst public relation program in place.
It is unfortunate that China is such a large country that nurses so many regional
cultures and political factions, so much energies have been wasted on in-fightings.
Working in the Chinese community gave me the feeling that such condition is like the
story we learnt as kids: the fisherman watching the clam and the crane
rendering each other helpless. We must either find ways or support existing
organizations to reach out to the mainstream to influence the public
opinions. Pui Ching produces many bright engineers, doctors and scientists,
do we have any good PR persons, media tycoons, lawyers or elected officials
who can help us? Lets work on that one.
The lesson from Indonesia hits home time and time again. Its about all the Chinese there
have been busy making money, so when trouble came, none of the wealth can buy
them political power and protection soon enough. Sure, protest and outcry all you
can. Too late is too late.
