About Tibet

From Jai Yee

We have had several e mails from lighters discussing Tibet, trying to find more information, I did check Columbia Encyclopedia:

Chinese first established relations with Tibet during the T'ang dynasty (618-906).
1720, the Manchu dynasty claimed suzerainty over Tibet.
(1906,1907)  Britain recognized China's suzerainty over Tibet.

At a conference (1913-14) of British, Tibetans, and Chinese at Simla, India, Tibet was tentatively confirmed under Chinese suzerainty and divided into an inner Tibet, to be incorporated into China, and an outer autonomous Tibet. The Simla agreement was, however, NEVER ratified by the Chinese, who continued to claim all of Tibet as "special territory." In 1951, Tibet became a "national autonomous region" of China under the traditional rule of the Dalai Lama, but under the actual control of a Chinese Communist Commision. In 1965 the Tibetan Autonomous Region was formally established.

From Guy Shuk

I read the Lighters' e-mails in regarding the history of Tibet. You know that Khun Luk ( That is CC LUK in Thai, a land he often visits---ssl) and I went to Nepal then Tibet about two years ago. When we were in Lhasa, our tour guide told us a lot of history of Tibet. I don't remember all the details but all I can remember is Tibet is part of China. We communicated with Tibetan, most of them, with Mandarin. To know Tibet, try to go there.

From Ivan Choi

I got 70 mark in history most of the time in Pui Ching's 14 years of school life. The rest of the school subjects are less than 70. Let me claim I was a very good history student for the time being. Tibet was part of the Middle Kingdom since the Yuan Dynasty. Koprikhan (spelling not sure), the grandson of the Gingaskhan (spelling not sure) moved into the Middle Kingdom and became the first emperor of the Yuan Dynasty. He also took in Tibet and the head water territories (their home land) of the Yellow River and the Yangtze River.Tibet was a part of China for a long time - same as other western territories.
