"Snow falling on cedars"---a most memorable movie, poetically filmed, superbly directed, quietly acted by some, expressively acts others. Each
frame of the film is an elegant still photograph. The story was written by
a high school English teacher, David Guterson, who lives on an island in the state of Washington. "Snow" was his first novel and he has written his
second novel since "snow". Scott Hicks, the director, first came on to the
big-time movie scene when he directed " Shine" in 1996. Hicks himself is an
interesting character, with father and grandfather born in the west Indies
and Burma, mother Scottish. Hicks was born in Uganda, raised all over the world, and became interested in film-making in Australia when attending
university.
The story is not a love story, it is not a mystery movie, not a racially explosives movie, not an art film, it is all of them together.
Would I see this movie again? probably not for a while if ever. You see, good movies as in all good things in life can be experienced only once.
Once you have the experience, you must put it into the most sacred depth of
you head, treasure it and savor it from time to time.
