It is a welcoming sight that more and more Lighters
are contributing to the web-site. Following the lead supplied by Larry Wan, and Luwig v.
B., the events are written in reverse order by date.
Bill Kao's operation is a success, and we can meet and greet him in the 40th reunion
in the flesh. We'll pat him on the shoulder,or back then. If the Lighters from the East
coast want to give him a Boston rocker like JFK's, I am sure he shall be very appreciative
of it.
Pang Woon Tong's "Big Tree Attracts Wind" Ming Pao clipping is timely, and his
forward is definitely right-on! How insightful to quote and improve on Chao Pei
"literati look down upon each other since time immemorial. and become more so
nowadays". Pui Ching does not need to ride on Dan Tsui's coat-tail to elevate her
reputation. It is unfortunate that they require to establish a public relations office to
fend-off the reporters, and correct the mis-information (e.g., the comments from a P. E.
teacher). Pui Ching became the bull's eye of reporters' arrows could be the combined
effects of sour-grape remarks from non-Pui Ching graduates, and self appointed Pui Ching
graduates many years behind "Fight Share", class of '57.
S.S. Lau has flattered us all in calling us old boys/girls. In fact, we are middle-aged
men and women who are still young at heart. I agree fully with S.S. that it takes more
than "bright" to become a Nobel laureate. Opportunity ranks first is quite true.
Bardeen has two from semi-conductors and superconductivity. Pauling has two from Chemistry
and Peace. Most of us Lighters are in engineering, and not physical/social sciences, that
makes it hard to win anything. However, sometimes, late at night, I wonder if I come up
with a proof of Fermat's Last Theorem a la Fermat, not the Andrew Wiles' 200 pages
version, will I get a Field's Medal like S. T. Yau? I hope Dr. Tu (Juliana Shaw's husband)
will advise me on that.
Last, but not the least, I am glad to see James Koo writing more than average to S.S., and
the web-site. I didn't expect that he can become a prolific writer in such a short time.
He has a normal family, and business to run, not like me, a single old man. I was a
photographer before, went to Westchester High night school in Playa del Rey for couple
semesters. I was using a Minolta SRT Super (same as SRT-102, I think). Before that I was
using a Voiglander Vitomatic II. I never owned Hasselbald, Rolleiflex, and Leica. To me,
Mymiya, Yashica-Mat (not Rolleicord) are good enough. Of course, there is no substitute
for the best. I'm glad that Larry knows how to let Lulu go along with all his hobbies.
