It must be getting close to the Christmas time-the high season for Hong Kong
tourists. Last week Ben Chin Bong was here, this week, we have S. S. Lau and his lovely wife (I am a local now). The first thing S.S. wanted do was
to verify my Cantonese to see if it is really like what I said on Lighter's
website. Barely three minutes into conversation, he was laughing so hard
("ti luk di ha" as he said), I had to pick him off the floor. Then he
advised me to get a HK ID quickly (by the way, if you ever lived in HK for 7
years, you can get a HK ID. I am not qualified. I need to get a work permit first, then can get an ID), otherwise walk on the other side of the
street of the policemen, and never ask them for directions, never.
While picking him up off the floor, something suddenly occurred to me. 30
years ago, I had to pick Winnie up from the dance floor when we first met.
I thought she was infatuated with me. Now I wonder what is the true reason.
Though she was born in Shanghai, she was raised in Hong Kong, speaks Cantonese as a native. Or .. ... I have two left feet? Then I remembered a
song (I think most of you would know), the verses goes like:
But I really don't want to know
So always make me wonder
Always make me guess
And even if I ask you
Darling don't confess
Let it remain your secret
But Darling I love you so
So, I really do not want to know. Let it be part of my sweet memory and her
secret.
After the first encounter, S.S.Lau told everybody I really need help in my
Cantonese. All the Lighters and their spouses are very helpful with advises. These advises generally fit into two categories, especially as
Winnie will be here after mid January. The ladies suggested I watch Cantonese soap opera on TV as much as I can, and the men had a totally
different suggestion. Before I even had a chance to tell Winnie what that
was, she said "Don't even think about it. After marrying me for 30 years,
you still cannot speak Cantonese, you will not learn in 3 weeks." You know Winnie is always right (Koo's theorem #1). But, will I ever learn to
speak Cantonese?
Here are the photos. The first one shows S.S.Lau laughing (and I laughed with him), and his wife is concerned if he got hurt. The second photo shows
those who gave me advises at Yau Yat Tsuen Club. All the men are not smiling as they
wondered what their wives will say when they get home about the advises they gave me. I am smiling as am happy to see all
the Lighters. By the way, do you notice we Chinese people always eat?
Wishing all of you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
