" Enemy at the Gates" --- It can be entitled " Bing Lum Shing Har"
in Chinese. The movie begins with Soviet troops being sent from the East to Stalingrad on trains to reinforce the
defending force. Yes, the German panzer units are the gates, and the siege is on. The stage
of this movie is "The battle of Stalingrad" in 1942-1943.
The following 15 minutes or so are as gruesome as some of the battle scenes of " Saving private Ryan", pretty bloody stuff with Soviet
troops with a only a few bullets and some without rifles being shot by the Germans at the front and being shot by their own forces at the
back. This is, however, is not a war movie in the conventional sense. It is a cat and mouse movie, rather like a mystery movie laced with a
love story.
Directed by French director Annaud of the " Seven Years in Tibet " fame, this movie is what a movie goer such as this lighter looks for
in a movie.
