Alumni Day at Pui Ching

J.Koo

Last Sat. (Dec. 14) was Alumni Day at Pui Ching. During the event, I noticed most of the awards at the school went to girl students. So we applauded heartily when one or two boy recipients showed up to show our encouragement and support. Believe even with relatively few girls in the class of 59, Cheng Leepo walked away with almost all the awards. May be they are just born smarter, and grow up to be right all the time. It took me a long time to figure this out, and I believe most of the girls know this when they were born. The event concluded with the traditional, obligatory dinner with our spouses.

Seven lighters showed up counting Ng M. T., who taught (retired now) Chinese at Pui Ching. I was very happy to meet and talk to Leung Ho-Chi and Tse Kong Fong the first time after 40+ years. Leung Ho-Chi told me how he started as a civil servant with HK government at HK$300 a month, and now this position pays around HK$15,000 a month?0 times during the 40 years. HK civil servants pay is one of the world's highest, if not the highest today. The highest paid official commands HK$7.5 million a year, with a bonus of HK$7.5 million, plus residence, car and etc. (his function is similar to that of Greenspan of U.S. Believe Greenspan's pay is less than US$200,000). While I remembered Tse Kong Fong wrote excellent and impressive (depressing for me then) classic Chinese compositions, he remembered me as the fastest on my omnipresent pocket English-Chinese dictionary.

For whatever the reasons, it always gives me great deal of pleasure of meeting the old classmates even thought I did not know them well then. So see you next year in HK. Meanwhile, wishing all of you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
