My Fair Lady

W. F. Pang

Reunion

A dozen of Lighters had a gathering at Yau Yat Chuen Garden Club on April 16, 2002 to welcome May Chan Kit-Bing (F 43) 's visit to Hong Kong. It was the second meeting with this charming lady since our last Re-union in Vancouver/Toronto.

Famed as the Dancing Queen, she was delighted to be addressed as 冰姐by our President Pang Woon-Tong. The Christian name of May sounds like "tail" in Cantonese. Those in the meeting preferred not to use such name for this expert in Ballroom Dancing Lighter.

Let's begin with a movie parade of the social activity Dancing: -

Deborah Kerr- "Shall We Dance" in "The King & I" with Yule Brynner *
Audrey Heyburn- with Rex Harrison in "My Fair Lady"
Nancy Kwan- "The World of Susie Wong"
Carolyn Jones- Co-star with Doris Day, James Stewart in "The Man Who Knew Too Much" **
Ingrid Bergman- "Joan of Arc" 聖女貞德傳
Natalie Wood- "West Side Story" 夢斷城西
Grace Kelly- Alfred Hitchcock's "Rear Window"

*Alternatively: Doris Day's "The Man Who Knew Too Much" Song: "Whatever will be will be"
** Hong Kong's equal, Chang Chung Man. She was a heavyweight in our younger days

May Chan showed us photos of her gala Birthday Party on February 17, 2002 in Sydney with 200 guests. More photos followed on her 2 weeks cruise in South Pacific. She really enjoys life.

1. (a) James Koo wondered at her dancing skill. She said that she took Ballroom Dance lesson in Sydney (for private lesson at A$55 an hour, for group teaching at A$15 for each member for 1.5 hour). The cost did not mean anything to her. She won many trophies.
(b) Secondly she completed the Floral Arrangement Course at the Sydney Technical Collage and won the 1st Prize Award at the Sydney Royal Easter Show for the 5 consecutive years. She was responsible for the floral decoration in Sydney Entertainment Centre during the 10th and 15th Anniversary Function of the Chinese Daily 新報. According to her accountant's advice, "May Wong" is her Trade Mark in Sydney florist business; despite that it is a non-profit making to her.

2. James Koo had the idea that Shanghai lady was the First Choice for companion, far better than the slim and arrogant Cantonese girls. On the contrary, May Chan held a bad impression of the Shanghai ladies in Sydney.
Summing up by President Pang: it is no good to say that all Shanghai ladies are bad. Indeed James Koo asserted that they are highly trustworthy. Unfortunately, James's Cantonese went wrong sounding like: "they have strong sexual desire", instead of: "信用很強".

3. Despite the advancing age of the Lighters, May Chan was thrilled at the good look of the ladies, like in their 20s only and are always young at heart. She enjoyed this lovely meeting and called upon her school friends 葉國平, 梁乃森 to come along in the Reunion. 黃壽康her buddy, escorted May Chan to her hotel.

4. Music Again
Most of us will remember this hit in the early 60s.
"………Oh darling, save your last dance for me".

Thanks to President Pang and Kai Shuk for arranging this enjoyable party.
