Movie Talk--2/21

SS Lau

"Afterglow"---Julie Chrity has lost a fair amount of her looks. She has gained wisdom, and a wise older woman at that. This type of wise older women is usually very cynical and few things in life can touch them. The character she played in this movie, nevertheless, showed one or two soft spots, therefore , she was not totally untouchable---a very attractive wise older woman with a few soft spots. Nick Nolte did not lose any of his looks, he did not have any to lose to begin with. He was just a solid character that has " presence", and can carry a film.

"Apostle"---This movie is made for Pui-Ching people,i.e., you and me. When I watched this movie, it was like being in a morning "Assembly" back in Pui-Ching. There was this southern Baptist preacher from Waco Texas, or some town in Texas, preaching to us, and there was a translator, most of the time, telling us what the preacher said ( who knows if the translation was accurate). The hymns in the movies are somewhat familiar, but not most of them. I enjoy watching this movie immensely, it has a very interesting, but simplistic, story line. The apostle truly believes in god, does a lot of good deeds, but he just could not control himself. Robert Devull is an actor all alone in his own class.
