Pang Wah-Fu (A27)

On March I, 2003, Hong Kong 52 high schools joined the 2nd Pui Ching Middle School Invitational Mathematics Completion. Lighters PTA and P.C. Education Institute made possible this successful half-day event.

Lighters may recall that we contributed over HKD120,000 to set up the Wong Yuet Chiu Memorial Scholarship round about 10 years ago. The HK Pui Ching Alumni applied this fund to promote the study of mathematics by conducting the above competition. It is an ideal testing ground for our students to whet their analytical skill with their fellow Form 1 to 4 members from other HK schools.

The half-day event also shows the efficiency of the organizer as the concluding ceremony took place right after the contest. Five Lighters presented in this occasion. Professor S. S. Lau accompanied the guest of honor, Profess Y.M. Ko, vice President of the City University of HK to the Religion Hall for the prize award.

The school principal MR. S.Y. Cheng gave a welcome speech appreciating the teaching staff's full year effort. Virtually the growing interest of our youngster in mathematics is the vital role played by Pui Ching in broadening the outlook in this skill.

As such Professor Ko was convinced that maths being the common language in Science worked equally like Chinese or English in the Humanities. It is the application of side of Mathematics, especially quantification, which brings about the tremendous benefit to our modern way of living as a result of scientific development.

Our President Pang Woon-Tong presented the prizes to the Form 2 winners. Certainly the HK elite schools reaped the major prizes. It is anticipated that Pui Ching, being the host, can accomplish better in the future events. We, the Lighters, can take pride in supporting this worthy cause.

The school principal arranged 'Yam Cha'at the nearby restaurant. Mr. Lam, P.C.'s Maths Panel, told us the trophies and printing accounted for most of the expenses. Lighters should be pleased that the money is well spent. After exchanging views with the school authority, Professor Lau was delighted at the encouraging performance of our students in the competition striving to maintain the Mathematics Siu Lam status in Hong Kong.
