Mixed Blessings 2004

W F Pang HK

HK experienced education reform, domestic violence, individual travelers' scheme for mainlanders west kowloon cultural district development dispute, and the abortive LINK share offer. Virtually HK people took it for granted as most of us are absent-minded professors of the colossal University of Society.

Lighters welcomed the New Year with a short trip to the Dragon Back at Sek O on Jan 2, 2005. Nine of us had a good view of Redhill Peninsula, Stanley and Tai Tam during the 80 minutes walk. Time for a cup of tea at President Pang's restaurant. Lighters bought Chinese pudding for the Lunar New Year, which was highly recommended bt the captain of Fung nTak Lau, Shaukiwan, certainly to the delight of our President.

The Re-Union tour of southern England and Baltic Cruise were reported by President Pang on Sep 24,2004. Three dinner gatherings took place at the Four Season Hall of Norwegian Dream.
It was a wonderful opportunity to meet guests from: Canada U K
American-African and US representative in the UN. They highly appreciated the close bond of Lighters after leaving PC at 1959. Indeed we set a good example to the writing in the American steel magnate, Andrew Carnegie's book mark, quote: " Let there be light- Genesis 1 : 3 "

We are loking forward to 2006 trip to Australia  & New Zealand arranged by Seto Ching, Chin Tung Cheong, Ho Cheuk Wai and Paul Wu. The gentle weather, lively seafood and the charming South Pacific can ensure a nice tour of Down Under and Kiwi Land.

Last December I visited Tsing Tao ( Anglo-German spelling ). Qingdao is characterized by red roof ( Catholic influence ) and green sea. The great plain of Shandong was the birth place of Conficius, Mensius, Lu Tze, Lu Ban ( tradesman's king ) and bizarre novelist Pu Chung Ling ( Liao Zhai ) plus the good guys from Leung Shan and the bad guys: Shandong bandit. As told by the tourist guide the roaring highwayman is replced by the toll gates across the province.

The communist paid great tribute to the female poet Li Qingzhu with an exhibition hall next to the No 1 Spring in the world. However the golden manuscript of Chairman Mao in Tai Ming Wu is more impressive than the patriotic poetess.

Qingdao will host the 2008 Olympic water sport. Do come along and
have a look of Yellow River followed the old saying : you will never get rest until you reach the river bank of Huang He. One of the main roads in the city is named Hongkong in 3 sections: east central & west.
