 " The Versatile Lighters"

Bob Chen

I read quite a few "what's new" from S.S., Harold Soo, Lawrence Wong, and Pat Wong. I'll try to explain each author's contribution in thefollowing:

1. It is truly unbelievable that S.S. can make my Vancouver mini-reunion so "book & sword"'s young helm's man, Chen Kar Look, living better than 007 in his movies. Kum Yung, cannot match S.S. in the Western food even if he lives in Hong Kong a long time. For me, the victim, and the butt of the joke, wishing it were true even with the bitter-sweet ending. The quality of life described therein far exceeds my day-to-day life.

2. On stem cell research, S.S., a unnamed Lighter, and Cal alumni news furnished a report on the subject more in-depth than Dr. Timothy Johnson of ABC News. I brought it up with one of my co-workers, a graduate of NTU (National Taiwan University) and Cal. He suggested that PRC might be a good source for stem cells, since the government still advocates one child per family. A large number of aborted fetuses could be available without much effort. The PRC government will welcome to any PR campaign to improve her negative human rights violation accusations. Any Lighters with ties to PRC wants to look into that?

3. The oil price analysis by Harold Soo is many-fold better than Wall Street Journal. So is the piece on Katrina and Rita. Harold writes like Will Rogers, better than most TV news anchors, male or female. It is our luck that some Lighters will find time to write.

4. Lawrence Wong's travelogue in Chinese brought us to North Africa and other places with a minimum of English intrusion. It is very time consuming to write in Chinese with any PC. I'm sure most Lighters do appreciate to read in Chinese without saying out loud.

5. Pat Wong's Tiffany and PC is the only article on name fight. Together with other e-mails by Peter, Linda, Wu-Ying, and Dennis, one sensed that the red and blue spirit do live in our hearts. I hope we shall overcome.

6. Eugene Lu, James Koo, where are you? We like to hear your inputs on item 5.
