I WAS NOT THERE |
As you all know, I did not graduate from Pui Ching in 1959. Consequently, I was missing from the graduation ceremonies and all the festivities. No doubt, you missed me. Many years later, a friend sent me a copy of the program for the Lighter's graduation ceremony. I read it with great interest. During the Toronto mini-reunion recently, I was sitting next to James Koo and I mentioned the fact that he was the top dog of the Faith class. He said he did not know that and no one at the event seened to remember either. They all wanted to know how I learned that. So, to prove my integrity and for your amusement, I've scanned the relevant pages of this program and asked Tony to post it on our website. Also included are my irrelevant comments. Page 1 is the cover page with the official Pui Ching logo. Notice the 1959 date. It is defintely the real thing. Page 2 is the agenda of the ceremony. I've omitted the words to the songs. Notice the names of the two school board directors. Mr. Su was Dennis Su's father. I met both Mr. Su and Mr. Wong in later years. They were both very successful people. It is my opinion that we owe our success to these two individuals and our principal Mr. Lam, who was also on the program that day. Page 3 is the list of the graduating class. Missing from the list is my name of course. Too bad. There were a total of 152 names on the list. For some reason, the girls were listed first on the right. There were only twenty five of them. I knew my class had only four girls but I was surprised that the entire class had only twenty five girls. How did we ever managed to organize those dancing parties? Page 4 starts the honor lists. As we all know, Lipo was the top dog of the entire class. Most people at the Toronto reunion seemed to remember that James Koo was the best in physics. They were right. Now, how many of you remember that Ms Au, James dream girl, was top in biology. On the left side of the page was the list of the top students of their respective classes. The only ones of interest to us were the ones in the graduating class. As I told my friends in Toronto, James was the top of the Faith class. Chan Yuk-Keung was the top the Hope class. Lipo was the top of the Charity class and Eugene Lu was the top of the Light class. I've always argued that grade don't meant much but I can be wrong sometimes. Page 5 is the list of the best behaved people. As you can see, James' name was on the top again. He must have won that honor because he was the quietest in the class due to the language barrier. As we all knew, up to 2002 his Cantonese was incomprehensible. But I assure you if you have not met him recently, his Cantonese is now much, much, much better. I can understand 99% of what he said as long as he is not being technical. Missing from the Bible Class honors were the classes of Lighters. Why was that? Page 6 Here is the list of students who had done extra duty for the school or for the class or both. |
